Troopers from the Michigan State Police Hart Post continue to investigate an accidental shooting that happened early this morning in Newaygo County.
On the opening day of deer firearm season, investigators say a 15 year old male was accidentally shot in the lower leg by a high powered rifle while he was in an elevated hunting blind in Denver Township.
State police says the rifle that discharged was in possession of another member of the teen’s hunting party.
The incident took place around 9:00 a.m.
The teen victim was rushed to Gerber Hospital in Fremont for treatment, and was later flown to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids for immediate surgery.
Police say the victim suffered serious injuries, but is expected to survive.
The shooting remains under investigation by the Michigan State Police.
