Man Holds Knife On Woman; Standoff Ends Peacefully

Grand Rapids Police surrounded a house on Garfield Street while a man held a woman hostage Friday morning.

Shortly before 8 a.m., after a standoff of about four hours, a man and was led out of the house in handcuffs.

The woman was apparently the man’s on again off again girlfriend.

The man was identified as Alonzo Gamble. The woman had broken up with him at a family gathering, said GRPD Capt. Dan Savage. Gamble began to drink and after a while he threatened the woman with a knife. Other people in the apartment were able to get out safely early on.

Police had streets surrounding the house at 714 Garfield NW blocked off. The building is the former Grand Rapids Popcorn building that has been converted into apartments.

At one point, a SWAT team approached the door of the building but did not go in.
