BATTLE CREEK, Mich – 15-year-old Deven Johnson said he and his 12-year-old daughter, Heaven, had no choice but to jump from their second story window to escape the fire.
His eight year old sister had to be rescued by firefighters. Johnson said her face and arm were badly burned in the fire.
Angel Santana lives next door to the home that caught fire on Young Street, in Battle Creek. It was destroyed early Thursday morning around 2 am.
“The whole porch was on fire. I don’t know if there was a back door but I couldn’t go in through the front at all,” Santana recalled.
He says a loud pop woke him up followed by screams. He then saw the flames outside his window.
When he learned an eight year old girl was trapped inside, he and one of the girl’s relatives sprang into action.
“So I immediately went to the window and tried breaking it with my hand because it’s too thick, so I picked up a rock and threw it at the window,” he explained.
He added, “I was going to try and go in, but it was too hot, too smoky, couldn’t breathe, couldn’t see past two feet.”
The eight year old was still trapped inside. She was found unconscious on the first floor. Firefighters revived her and took her to the hospital in critical condition.
“They was nice kids. So when I found out it was them, I was deeply saddened to find out right around the corner that happened,” Jerry Witcher, a neighbor said.
“I hope she be alright,” he said. “Sadden me deeply. When you know somebody it hit close to home.”
The girl is in critical condition. The Battle Creek Police and Fire Departments are investigating as well as the state fire marshal.
Police say they did take a couple people in for questioning, so far no one has been charged in connection with the fire.
