Here is a look at the normal weather for December and some of the records that exist.

TEMPERATURES: Normal highs start at 40 degrees on the 1st and drop to 32 by the end of the month. Normal lows fall from 28 to 20. The record high for December is 69, set on the 5th in 2001. The record low for the month is 18 below, set on the 19th in 1983.

PRECIPITATION: There is normally 2.50″ of precipitation in December. There has been as much as 6.95″ in 1893 and as little as 0.31″ in 1913.

SNOWFALL:  Normal snowfall this month is 21.9″. Grand Rapids’ snowiest December was in 2000, when 59.2″ fell.

LENGTH OF DAYLIGHT:  On the 1st, the length of daylight is 9 hours and 14 minutes. It drops to exactly 9 hours on the 23rd, and increases to 9 hours and 4 minutes by the 31st. December is the last month in which the length of daylight decreases.
