WAYLAND, Mich. – Students at Wayland High School are standing behind one of their classmates who is battling cancer.

Senior Courtney Jones was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkins Lymphoma. Both students and staff are helping the teen as she fights the disease. The boys varsity basketball team and other students have shaved their heads in support after Courtney’s first chemo treatment.

School leaders have ordered purple ribbons to wear and show their support. Purple ribbons signify general cancer awareness. Both students and staff have helped raise about 600 dollars to help with the family’s expenses.

The high school’s Student Council is also planning a fundraiser for the Helen Devos Children’s Hospital at the home basketball game on February 1, raising money by selling t-shirts. They are also working to coordinate hair donations from students who want to donate and help make wigs for those going through cancer treatments.

“Words can’t describe how incredible all the support has been,” Courtney says.  She is hoping to attend Grand Valley State University in the fall.
