DETROIT, Mich., — An effort to recall Detroit mayor Dave Bing continues to grow on the east side of the state.

The Wayne County Election Committee announced that a petition to remove the mayor has been approved and that it needs 43,000 signatures to call for a special election. That election could happen as early as February.

FOX 17 learned that the recall effort was based largely on Bing’s decision to reduce the number of hours police precincts are open to the public.

Bing’s opponents say they have already collected a few thousand signatures toward that special election.

At last check, Mayor Bing’s office had no comment.
