FRUITPORT TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The suspect in the armed robbery at the Cloverville EZ Mart has been arrested in Florida.

The assailant is a 22-year-old male from Muskegon. When police obtained a warrant to search his apartment they found clues that he headed south to Florida.

Multiple police agencies searched for the suspect, including a K-9 unit, but were unable to locate him.

Investigators from the Fruitport Township Police Department teamed up with U.S. Marshals and local police agencies in Florida. Together, they were able to locate him and make the arrest Friday at a residence near Orlando, Fla.

The robbery occurred at about 4 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27. An employee at the EZ Mart called police and reported that a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt, ski mask and gloves had robbed the business at gunpoint.

The employee said the robber demanded cash and left the scene once he gave it to him. No one was injured.

Investigators later learned that a male subject, who was identified by police as being in close proximity to the scene had purchased the mask and gloves used in the robbery one day earlier.

Both the suspect and a female companion, who is also from Michigan, were interviewed by Fruitport Township Police during the investigation. Officials are not sure if the female subject had any knowledge of the incident or involvement. They do know she was not present the night of the robbery.

The suspect is being held at the Orange County Jail in Florida until he is extradited back to Michigan.
