MILKY WAY – The Geminid meteor shower peaks Thursday night, December 13, 2012, and if Wednesday night is any indication, we are in for quite a show once again.
LIVE VIDEO FROM NASA:
Hundreds of people posted on the FOX 17 Facebook page about seeing the shooting stars. Many comments involved seeing several in a matter of minutes. It’s interesting to note that the peak is actually Thursday night, so it could be an even bigger show than it was on Wednesday night. From EarthSky, here are some tips on viewing the shooting stars: http://earthsky.org/astronomy-essentials/ten-tips-for-watching-the-geminid-meteor-shower
It looks like skies will be clear once again tonight. The moon is also in the new phase, meaning there won’t be any moonlight to interfere with the viewing process. Astronomers are estimating there could be as many as 100 shooting stars per hour away from city lights.
