WYOMING, Mich. – A candlelight vigil was held for the victims of the elementary school shooting in Connecticut.

The vigil started around 9:45 p.m. at the former Studio 28 site at 1350 28th Street SW in Wyoming.

A grass-roots effort was started by Ricky VanLuong, 19, who organized the event. He said he was laying in bed wondering what he could do to raise awareness of the heinous crime.

He organized the vigil on twitter, Facebook, even called local radio stations trying to raise awareness for the event.

He says he just felt so helpless and really wanted to find away to help make sense of the incident.

During our 10 p.m. broadcast, about 40 supporters were seen holding hands and saying prayers for the families.

The event organizer says that’s just not enough, he wants to prevent these incidents from ever happening.

“If this could happen in Connecticut, what’s stopping it from happening here?” VanLuong asked FOX 17’s Dave Spencer.

VanLuong says the catalyst for starting this event was imaging those kids not being able to open Christmas gifts in a few weeks. He can’t imagine the horror those families and parents face tonight.
