Van Buren County, Mich. –  A police chase reaching speeds of 80 mph ends with the 56-year-old suspect smashing into a garage.

On Monday, Dec. 31, the Van Buren County Central Dispatch received a call from the Speedway gas station located at 855 S Kalamazoo street in Paw Paw.

Police were called to the gas station on a report that a white male was pumping gas into a blue Buick Riviera. The man was recognized by the station as someone who allegedly filled up his car in the previous week and sped off without paying.

A deputy who was in the area at the time attempted to pull the man over. The driver sped up and began the chase by driving through a car dealership. The suspect then headed eastbound on St. Joseph Street. The chase led officials down multiple streets in the area but came to an end when the man drove through a private residences yard, barreling through an unattached garage. When the car came to a stop the suspect began to flee on foot.

Officials were able to catch up to the man and made an arrest.

The garage received extensive damage to the door and the door frame. There was no one inside at the time.

Deputies believe drugs and alcohol may be a factor.

The suspect is being held at the Van Buren County Jail while he awaits his arraignment.
