GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The morning commute got ugly Thursday when a minor crash led to a second crash on northbound US-131 near downtown Grand Rapids.

The first crash took place around 7:30 a.m. in the left lane of the expressway and blocked the approach to the Wealthy Street exit ramp. Within a few minutes, another crash took place at the same spot, and emergency crews were forced to block all but the right lane.

The resulting traffic jam stretched nearly to 44th Street for more than an hour. The crash scene was cleared around 8:30 a.m.

There were no injuries.

There were a few other crashes around West Michigan, including a slide-off on one of the curves on Bailey Drive north of Vergennes Street in Ada Township.

Roads around the area got a light dusting of snow, with Muskegon County experiencing the most roads with snow sticking to them. Salt trucks were sent out from the Muskegon County Road Commission shortly before 5 a.m., and the scanners in the county were fairly quiet.

Other traffic mishaps tended to be the type where drivers took out mailboxes.
