BELDING – An Ionia County intersection was closed  for several hours as police investigate  a shooting that left one person dead and put an officer on paid administrative leave.

At around 5:12 a.m., Michigan State Police said an officer from the Belding Police Department heard two loud noises outside the Belding Police Department. The officer went to check it out and noticed damage to a police cruiser. A person was also spotted getting into a van, so the officer followed the van and called for backup.

An officer from the Belding Police Department and a Michigan State Police Trooper stopped the van near Belding Road and Hawley around 5:20 am.

Police said the driver got out of the vehicle and fired at the officers. The Belding Police officer returned fire, striking the suspect at least once.

The suspect died at the scene.

No officers were hurt, police added.

Police have not confirmed the identity of the suspect.

The intersection was reopened Saturday afternoon.
