Irish Rolled: Alabama Defeats Notre Dame 42-14 in BCS National Title Game

MIAMI — Two of college football’s greatest programs didn’t put together one of college football’s greatest games.

The Alabama Crimson Tide won their third national title in four seasons by topping Notre Dame in the BCS National Championship game 42-14 at Sun Life Stadium. With the win, Alabama also claimed their record-setting ninth AP national title, one more than Notre Dame.

The Tide had it pretty much wrapped up soon after the game got started.

Alabama took the ball first and covered 82 yards in just five plays, scoring when Eddie Lacy rushed in from 20 yards out. It was a sign of things to come, as Alabama would score touchdowns on its first three drives of the game.

The Crimson Tide were truly dominant in the first quarter. Alabama had racked up 202 yards of total offense to Notre Dame’s 23 yards. At the end of the first half, Alabama had outgained Notre Dame 309-124.

It was 35-0 Alabama before Notre Dame finally got on the board with a two-yard scamper by Everett Golson in the third quarter.

Alabama would tack on another score early in the fourth quarter to make it 42-7.

Notre Dame would wrap up the scoring with a six-yard touchdown pass from Golson to Theo Riddick.

Alabama finished with 529 yards of total offense. AJ McCarron completed 20 of his 28 passes for 264 yards and four touchdowns. Eddie Lacy ran for 140 yards, while TJ Yeldon added 108 yards rushing for Alabama. Each had one touchdown as well.

Notre Dame was led offensively by Golson who threw for 270 yards. Notre Dame could only manage 32 yards on the ground. Alabama ran for 265 yards as a team.
