ROCKFORD, Mich. – The superintendent of Rockford Public Schools has confirmed that four students – a 13-year-old girl and three boys – were suspended from East Rockford Middle School in December after a “sexting” incident.

The students have since returned to class.

“Sexting” is the sending and receiving of sexually explicit material with another person, primarily through cell phones.

Superintendent Mike Shibler said the girl had texted a photo of herself to a boy, and that the photo had circulated around to other students.

Dr. Shibler said the school system had already launched a program to discuss adolescent issues, such as dangers with misused technology at the beginning of the school year. “Developing Healthy Kids” is a five-part series of forums that dives into topics of depression, suicide, anxiety and substance abuse. The latest forum, “Electronic Safety In The 21st Century,” is scheduled for Jan. 17.

Sexting is listed as one of the discussion points.
