WEST MICHIGAN — (FOX 17) — The first significant lake-effect snowfall of the season will continue overnight tonight and into Tuesday. Already cold temperatures will get even colder as well.

The image shows the expected snowfall overnight tonight. Many areas along and west of U.S. 131 will receive another 1 to 3 inches, with some locally higher amounts possible. In addition, winds will be very brisk, so wind chills will be well below zero most of the night. There is a lake-effect snow advisory in effect until 5AM Tuesday for most of West Michigan.

As you might expect with lake-effect, snowfall amounts so far have been quite variable. Parts of Ottawa County, especially Jenison and Hudsonville, have received over five inches, while most of Kent County is still under three inches.  I would love to hear how much you have in your backyard. Send me an e-mail to rmecklenburg@fox17online.com, post a comment on this story, or post on the FOX 17 Facebook Page, located HERE. Please make sure you indicate where you are. I’ll be showing some of the totals on FOX 17 News.

Of course, lake-effect snow is caused by cold air blowing across the relatively warm waters of Lake Michigan, and there is plenty of cold air this time around. Overnight lows will fall to near zero in most locations, with wind chill values between 10 below and 15 below.
