ZEELAND, Mich. – Two West Michigan men fell through the ice Thursday.

The first incident happened at about 12: 57 p.m. in Zeeland Township when a man, 78, went ice fishing.

The man put a hole in the ice, not realizing the ice was too thin, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department. When he began the trip back, the ice broke, and he fell in the water up to his chest. The ice continued to crack as the man struggled to make his way back to the surface. He was able to get himself onto a dock, where a neighbor assisted him onto shore.

Medical personnel responded to the scene but the man sought his own treatment.

The second incident happened at about 3: 15 p.m. in Grand Haven Township on Milhouse Bayou. A man, 61, was walking out on the ice when he fell through. Another fisherman was able to pull him to safety with a long, metal pole.

The man was transported to the hospital for treatment by EMS.
