GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Expect a wide variety of conditions on the Monday morning commute depending on where you are in West Michigan, and what roads you take to get to work and/or school.
Air temperatures as of 3:00 A.M. had already climbed above freezing for the large majority of West Michigan, and the heaviest precipitation had moved out of the region, as seen by the above radar image. Lingering areas of drizzle and light rain were still falling, but as liquid for most locations.
As temperatures continue to climb, crews continue to plow and treat roads, and traffic increases Monday morning, freeways and most other main roads around the area should become just wet rather than icy.
However, there will still be some lingering issues:
- Northern sections of the viewing area (north of I-96) will see temperatures hover near freezing much of the morning
- Back roads, along with neighborhood streets, driveways, sidewalks, etc. will still have a glaze of ice through the morning
- Unpaved roads will likely stay icy most of the day
- Areas of fog will continue to thicken
- Slushy spots or ponding on any road can cause drivers to lose traction quickly
