HICKORY CORNERS, Mich. – Nearly half of the roof of a 100-year-old Masonic lodge in Hickory Corners caved in due to the weight of heavy rains and melting snow Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday night more than two dozen people gathered in the lodge, under the same spot where the roof fell, for a dinner.

Mason Junior Deacon Ron Wilson said no one noticed any problem with the roof that night.

When a few Masons returned Wednesday morning to clean up, the saw a small leak.

“The master of the lodge was going up the ladder and got about three-fourths of the way up and the roof went down,” said Wilson.  “We are very fortunate that he didn’t get caught by just about 10 feet or less.”

No one was hurt when the roof fell.  Crews spent all day trying to cover the structure with a temporary roof to prevent further damage.

We’re told the Masons will look for a new meeting place while they determine if they will rebuild the building.
