DETROIT — Tigers President and General Manager Dave Dombrowski does not enjoy the arbitration process and prefers to avoid it at just about any cost. Today, it cost him $6.725 million.

The Detroit Tigers signed right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer to a one-year deal worth $6.725 million dollars. The figure was the mid-point of the two sides arbitration filings. Scherzer was seeking $7.4 million while the Tigers were offering $6.05 million.

Scherzer was 16-7 with a 3.74 ERA in 2012 and finished second in the American League in strikeouts behind teammate Justin Verlander with 231. In three seasons with the Tigers, Scherzer is 43-27 with a 3.89 ERA.

The Tigers have yet to go to a hearing with any player since Dave Dombrowski took over as president and general manager following the 2001 season.
