ZEELAND, Mich. — They consider themselves the “Sixth Man” at basketball games, but is the Zeeland East student cheering section the best in the entire state of Michigan?

The student section is better known as “The Coop,” and it often averages 150 members at the Chix home basketball games.┬áZeeland East joins Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard, Buchanan, Vandercook, and defending champion Frankenmuth as the five finalists in the MHSAA’s Battle of the Fans II, the second annual contest to decide the best high school student cheering section in the state.

MHSAA staff and Student Advisory Council members will visit all five finalists for home games during the second half of this regular season, with coverage and video from those visits and the announcement of the winner all to be published on the MHSAA Second Half website. The Student Advisory Council will visit Zeeland East on Friday, February 8 when the Chix host Mona Shores.

The MHSAA will also hold an online vote on it’s Facebook page from February 18-21.

The winner will be announced Feb. 22, and video of all five sections will be played on the Breslin Center HD scoreboard during the Finals in March. The champion also will be recognized during the Boys Semifinals on March 22.
