NEW ENGLAND – It was a snowstorm and blizzard of historic proportions! Two storms combining, or what meteorologists call “phasing” together along the East Coast of the United States. The system that dropped several of inches of snow in West Michigan on Thursday and Thursday night, continued its trek eastward as it met up with another low pressure area along the Mid-Atlantic. So the moisture and cold air were certainly in place for super totals of snow.

The storm is almost gone now (still snowing in the extreme Northeast in Maine) and people are truly digging out and probably will be for days in some locations. The highest snowfall reported was 38 inches in Milford, Connecticut. Almost 33 inches was tallied in Gorham, Maine, while Centereach, New York had 32 inches. Boston picked up almost 22 inches, and New York City’s Central Park measured 11.4 inches.

The storm left some 650,000 residents and businesses without power, more than five thousand flights cancelled, and at times hurricane force winds with gusts of 82 mile per hour reported on the shores in Westport, Connecticut. The attached photo was taken from Twitter of a residential area in Boston. Note how the cars parked along the street on the left side are barely visible. While this storms dropped some significant amounts of snow across most of the FOX 17 viewing area (the highest was 15 inches in Muskegon), we’ll be in a period of thawing out with some rain possible later Sunday and into Monday as temps warm briefly into the 40s. Flooding may not become an issue with all of the snow, warm temps, and rain on the way. The immediate concern still remains in Ottawa County in Robinson Township along the Grand River where an ice jam has sent water levels about two feet over flood stage.
