OAKFIELD, Mich.  – Multiple fire department fought a blaze in Kent County Sunday evening.  The homeowners say it started in the basement of their lakehouse in the 10,000 block of Simpson West in Oakfield, near Little Blue Lake.

Frank and Elaine Lowry said they were at home around 6:30 when the fire started.  They tried putting the fire out themselves with no luck, but were able to escape without any inuries.

Two and a half  hours later, additional fire departments and water tankers were still being called out to help.   The biggest obstacle seemed to be the icy road conditions on the private drive, and fire trucks were having a hard time getting to the house..  County Road Commission trucks were called to lay down salt,  while some fire crews were able to pump water from the lake to douse the flames.

The Lowry’s say  they’ve lived in the house for 21 years, but now it’s a total loss and they’re planning on staying in a hotel.
