GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  — After two years of breaking world records, LaughFest will try to break another one this year, and for 2013, they’re using mustaches.

For the community event kickoff this year, LaughFest wants the community to help break the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people wearing false mustaches. The current record is at 648 people.

Last year, the Guinness World Record that was broken was the greatest number of people wearing animal noses in a single place, when 607 people put on chicken beaks and performed the chicken dance.

In 2011, 925 rubber chickens were tossed in downtown Grand Rapids, breaking the previous record of 265, which was set in Massachusetts.

Anyone who wants to participate in the mustache lineup will get an official LaughFest mustache. The lineup will begin at 5:30 p.m. on March 7 near Rosa Parks Circle and the official attempt to break the record will be at 6:30 p.m.

After the mustache lineup, restaurants and bars in the area will hold special LaughFest events, including chicken dinners, and part of the money made from each dinner will be donated to Gilda’s Club. A list of restaurants offering the chicken dinners can be found online.

In addition, starting at 8 p.m., Pub 43, GP Sports, The Woods and Buffalo Wild Wings will hold “Opening Night Parties” that are open to the public. They will have drink specials and giveaways.

Finally, there will be comedy preview shows at 8 p.m. and again at 9 p.m. at Dr. Grin’s at the B.O.B., McFadden’s Restaurant and Saloon and The Pyramid Scheme. The shows include previews of the Clean Comedy Showcase as well as local comics and other acts scheduled for the comedy festival. Fast passes for the shows are available at LaughFest Central, but they only guarantee a seat as long as the ticket holder is seated 15 minutes before start time. A suggested donation of $5 to Gilda’s Club will be collected at the door.

LaughFest will run from March 7 until the 17th.
