CASCADE, Mich. – A lumber store in Cascade will be closing its doors after more than 50 years in business.

Meekhof Lumber, which opened in 1957, is shutting down due to economic reasons.

Co-owner, Gary Meekhof says he has worked at the store since high school.

He took it over from his father a number of years ago.

He says the entire market for lumber has completely changed.

At one time, customers bought things like windows and shingles from the lumber stores. Now, he says they get them elsewhere.

He says construction has also slowed in Michigan and many of his suppliers are closing as well.

With so much history at the store, customers like John Shipley are sad to see it go.

“It’s going to be a sorely missed mom and pop store,” said Shipley.

Meekhof says the store’s last day will be June, 30.

He said they will be planning a dutch auction or some type of special sale before the closing date.
