Unusually Cold Start To April

WEST MICHIGAN — (FOX 17) — One year ago Monday, the high temperature in Grand Rapids was 59º. There had already been several days so far in 2012 of high temperatures in the 70s and 80s, including a high of 87º on March 21. This year is a much different story.

Monday’s high temperature was only 35º. Muskegon also hit 35º, as did Holland. Kalamazoo had a high temperature of 37º. These highs were a full 10 to 15 degrees below normal. Incredibly, these there have been even colder opens to the month of April. Here is a list of the coldest high temperatures on April 1:

  • 29º in 1911
  • 29º in 1899
  • 31º in 1965.

In addition the the cold air, there was some snow. Grand Rapids received 0.1″, while most other areas had a trace. As you can see from this image from FOX 17 radar, some areas continue to see some light snow or snow flurries.
