GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Brad Debruyn woke up to a phone call with information that still hasn’t sunk in.

It was about his best friend 18 year old Spencer McGregor.

“My friend Emma called me and said… you know Spencer’s dead? Spencer’s, what do you mean Spencer’s dead?” Debruyn recalled the conversation.

“There’s no one in this town that doesn’t like him. He was well-loved by everybody,” he said.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department said McGregor was on driving along Mercury Drive around 5:15 am when his vehicle rolled, crossed the center lane and crashed into a tree.

“To take Spencer’s life, I just don’t understand it. He’s such a good guy. That’s the only way to describe him. ya know, always was laughing, life of the party, ya know? He just liked having fun,” Debruyn explained.

Authorities said they aren’t sure what caused the crash, but the 18-year-old was wearing his seat belt.

“He’s gone. We will never see him again. I said, it’s bad to say, I wish he’d be in the hospital with a broken leg or something. and say you learn your lesson buddy?’ but I’ll never get to see him again, ever,” Debruyn said.

The two had been living together for the past two months.

“I let him sleep in my room while I couched surf, just cause he had nowhere to go,” Debruyn said.

He said McGregor loved to skateboard, and the recent grand haven high school graduate had a child on the way.

“Now his kid will never know its father. He would have been a great dad,” Debruyn said of McGregor. “You never promised tomorrow. It’s a reality check for me too.”

“He was a fun guy. He really was a good man,” Debruyn said.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating the crash.
