DETROIT — The Tigers got their AL Championship rings and then beat the team that got them those championship rings again.

The Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees 8-4 at Comerica Park to improve to 3-2 on the season. Miguel Cabrera went 4-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Cabrera now has RBI’s in all five of the Tigers games this season.

Austin Jackson went 3-for-5 and scored three times while Torii Hunter went 3-for-5 as well with two runs and one RBI.

Max Scherzer (1-0) started strong for the Tigers through five innings. He struck out seven and the only run he gave up was solo home run by Vernon Wells in the second inning. Scherzer got into some trouble in the sixth inning though, as he walked the first two batters he faced. After Travis Hafner made it 5-2 Detroit with an RBI base-hit, Tigers manager Jim Leyland pulled Scherzer for Al Alburquerque. The Yankees scored two more times to make it 5-4 and Scherzer was on the hook for all four runs.

Detroit had scored four times in the previous inning to go up 5-1. After the Yankees made it a one-run game, Detroit scored two more times in the sixth and added an insurance run in the eighth inning to go to win 8-4. Before the game, the Tigers players and coaches received their AL Championship rings in ceremony on the field.

The Tigers will look for the series sweep tomorrow. Justin Verlander will start for Detroit against New York Yankees ace CC Sabathia. First pitch is scheduled for 1:08 p.m.
