(WEST MICHIGAN) — Early April snow is falling across West Michigan this morning, especially in Muskegon and Newaygo counties. Light to moderate snow will continue for the rest of the morning and mix in with some rain towards afternoon as temperatures start to warm. Areas in Muskegon and Newaygo counties could have light accumulations less than an inch in some areas while areas to the south will likely see a wet, sloppy mess.

Winds will pick up this weekend as well, making it feel even cooler by dropping feel-like temperatures into the low 30’s for the afternoon. Rain/snow mix will come to an end early in the evening and skies will try to clear through the overnight but may have difficulty completely clearing. If some clearing does occur tonight there is a fairly good chance to see the Northern Lights, especially in the northern counties.

Clouds will then increase Sunday morning ahead of another system that will move through early Sunday morning bringing chances for more light rain showers. Rain should end by early afternoon Sunday and the sun may make an appearance in the afternoon before more rain chances return Monday.

Flooding still remains an issue for many streams and rivers in West Michigan. Here is a link to the National Weather Service’s up to date flood information: http://water.weather.gov/ahps2/forecasts.php?wfo=grr

Areas in West Michigan saw between 2 and 5 inches of rain since Monday creating flooding hazards. If Grand Rapids measures at least a quarter of an inch of liquid today, we will tie the record for most consecutive days with rainfall totals over a quarter of an inch. The record from February 1898 was 6 consecutive days and if the forecast pans out we will likely shatter that record Sunday and Monday.
