WYOMING, Mich. – Late Tuesday night, the Grandville Chief of Police, Dan Steele, told FOX 17 that the body found in the Grand River was a woman.

The Kent County Medical Examiner accompanied a group of investigators including the Kent County Dive Team on a boat to where the body was discovered, on the western banks of the river.

At 8:00pm on Tuesday police say they were contacted by two people kayaking who told them they had found a body in the Grand River close to the Market Street Exit off the Westbound lanes of I-196.

Police from Wyoming, Grandville and the Kent County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the search.

Chief Steele said he considers the woman’s death suspicious but would not comment on any person’s of interest of the manner of death at this time.

The woman’s body was close to an area police had been searching for the two days leading up to Tuesday’s discovery.

The Market Street Exit was the last place 51 year old Mary Tornga was seen alive early Sunday Morning.

Police say Tornga was riding with her husband, having just left a party when she exited the car around 1:00am Sunday.

Police returned to the scene on Monday finding a shoe belonging to Tornga and searched the area by helicopter.

Then, Tuesday afternoon, hundreds of flyers with Tornga’s photo were handed out and posted around the area by friends and family of the missing woman,

Police say an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning and they hope to know more about the woman’s identity at that time.
