HOLLAND, Mich. — An Amtrak train struck a pedestrian in Holland on Monday night.
Capt. Robert Buursma of the Holland Police Department told FOX 17 News that the 52-year-old man from Holland was apparently sleeping at the side of the railroad tracks at 17th Street and Lincoln Avenue when he was struck by an Amtrak passenger train around 9:20 p.m. Monday.
The engineer spotted the man and tried to stop the train but was unable to do so in time.
The man was seriously injured, was treated at the scene, and then was transported to Holland Community Hospital, where no condition report was available Monday evening.
The train was en route from Chicago at the time of the incident. There were no reports of injuries on the train.
Police were on the scene for about an hour before the area was cleared.
