Monday night update on Plaza Towers

We wanted to provide you with the latest update as of 11 p.m. Monday, April 22, 2013.

As you know, our crews have been working around the clock to mitigate flooding at Plaza Towers. This and other work in the downtown area is being done in cooperation with the City of Grand Rapids and its engineers. The goal is to ensure water removal is managed in a coordinated way that does not cause further damage to the City’s sanitary system or Plaza Towers.

At this moment, we have been advised by the City’s engineering department and our independent engineers to slow our water removal efforts until the Grand River begins to recede. As the river recedes we will be able to reassess the situation to provide a more accurate estimate for re-entry to the building for residents and/or business use. This is expected to take several more days.

Mayor George Heartwell has asked that we extend his heartfelt appreciation for the support from all residents and businesses in Plaza Towers and beyond.  “This has been a true recognition of the cooperation and collaboration that makes our city great.”

We can’t thank you enough for your patience and cooperation in this unprecedented situation. The following are some immediate areas designed to begin to offer some assistance as we work through these issues in partnership with the City of Grand Rapids.

1.     We urge any resident with an immediate need or question may call our staff at 616-855-3335. For emergency assistance, residents may call Heart of West Michigan United Way at 211.

2.     Plaza Towers apartment residents will be given a rent credit for the days they are unable to occupy their units as part of their May lease payments.

3.     Plaza Towers is also working to develop a plan to help compensate apartment residents for food that will need to be discarded as a result of a lack of refrigeration. We hope to share this plan in the next few days.

It is important that we manage this flood in a way that does not further damage your homes, businesses, or the greater community. We thank you for your patience and you diligence in helping us do the right thing for our greater community and the integrity of our city.  We will update you again tomorrow with any additional information.
