GRAND RAPIDS, Mich – Below is the most recent update on flood related issues in the city of Grand Rapids:

The City of Grand Rapids continues to monitor the Grand River’s level. Although flood waters are receding from a high level of 21.85 feet on Sunday, many downtown buildings on both sides of the river, as well as some homes have experienced flooding in their basements. City staff is completing damage assessment for property affected by the flood. The City will continue to operate the Emergency Operation Center and will remain on high alert.

If you evacuated your home or business, it is recommended that you clean and disinfect where the flooding occurred within 24-48 hours of returning. Please wear gloves when handling anything that may have been in flood water or sewage. Additionally, if you have experienced water entering your home or business, please contact City of Grand Rapids SEWER MAINTENANCE at (616)456-3246. Those affected are encouraged to contact their insurance carrier to determine coverage for any property damage due to flooding.

Please use extreme caution on walkways and areas adjacent to the river. We are starting to see the potential for undermining and seepage along the river edges which may make banks unstable. Residents are strongly urged to use caution when driving over any water-covered roadways. Do NOT attempt to drive through flooded areas.

The following three roads remain closed due to flooding.

  • 1.Butterworth -O’Brien to Maynard
  • 2.Elmdale -Briggs to the Grand River
  • 3.Indian Mounds Drive -West of Market
