KENT COUNTY, Mich – Two people were hospitalized following a multiple vehicle crash along I-96 late Wednesday evening.

The crash happened in the eastbound lanes near the M-6 interchange.

A Michigan State Trooper at the scene tells FOX17 an East Beltline Towing truck was pulled over along the highway to assist another driver with a flat tire when another vehicle driven by a 23-year-old from Rockford went around slowing traffic and clipped the tow truck.

The Rockford driver’s vehicle then caught fire and spun out. People at the scene of the crash pulled the Rockford driver out of his vehicle onto the nearby grass until first responders arrived. The Rockford driver ended up suffering hip injuries.

The driver of the car with the flat tire was in the tow truck at the time of the collision and was unharmed. The driver of the tow truck was briefly pinned between the tow truck and the car with a flat tire, but escaped the collision with minor injures.

The Rockford driver and the tow truck driver were both transported to Spectrum Butterworth hospital for treatment, and are expected to recover.

Eastbound I-96 was fully reopened around 2:00 a.m. Thursday.
