Student Critical After School Bus Crossing Accident

Jovani ViverosOTTAWA COUNTY, Mich.– The 15-year-old student who was hit by a car Thursday morning at the bus stop has been identified as Jovani Viveros Villa from the Marne area.

The accident happened around 7 a.m. off 8th Avenue, north of Arthur Street in Wright Township.

Investigators say the teenager had crossed the street outside of his home off 8th Avenue to get on the Coopersville School bus. Deputies say the bus had been traveling southbound on 8th avenue and was stopped near the student’s home when a car traveling northbound on 8th Avenue went through the flashing red lights of the school bus and hit Viveros.

He suffered broken bones and was taken to Spectrum Hospital. He is in critical, but stable condition.

Viveros attends school at the New Options alternative education program in Alledale and has siblings in the Coopersville School District.

The assistant principal of New Options is at the hospital with the family.

The driver of the car has been identified as 79-year-old Margaret Geffner who was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Here is a statement to parents from Coopersville Public Schools:

“This morning a former Coopersville student was seriously injured at a

bus stop.  The Coopersville bus was not involved in the accident.

Student riders on the bus are meeting with school counselors.  Our

thoughts and support are with the student and family.”

The incident is still under investigation.
