PORTAGE, Mich. — A suspect has been taken into custody following a high-speed chase and foot pursuit early Thursday morning.

The active search had been in progress in parts of Portage and Kalamazoo adjacent to I-94.

Speeds exceeded 100 mph on eastbound I-94 after a Mattawan officer chased a vehicle east on I-94 into Kalamazoo County. The chase is believed to have started sometime after 4:30 a.m. Shortly after Portage and Kalamazoo County units were alerted, the pursued vehicle crashed as it left the expressway at the Oakland Drive ramp.

Van Buren County dispatch told FOX 17 News they believed only one suspect was in the vehicle. That suspect left the crashed vehicle and possibly ran across the freeway into the neighborhood north of I-94.

Officers from the Portage Police Department, along with the Mattawan officer, were concentrating their search in the woods and neighborhood around Holiday Lane.  Shortly before 6:00 a.m., a suspect was taken into custody on West Kilgore.
