GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Grand Rapids’ state of emergency has been extended.

City leaders declared a state of emergency on April 19th, as a result of record flooding along the Grand River. Tuesday morning, city commissioners voted to extend it through May 24th.

The city manager says the extension will give staff adequate time “to complete damage assessments.”

Businesses and other entities are able to fill out surveys detailing how the business community was impacted by the flooding. The city assessor’s office is asking for businesses to fill out and complete the surveys by Wednesday, May 1st.

The local state of emergency declaration remains in effect for all Kent County townships, villages, and cities, through May 24, 2013.

The ‘state of emergency’ process is necessary to determine if Governor Snyder will issue a disaster declaration. That’s a step towards requesting FEMA funding or assistance.
