photoHOLLAND, Mich. — Gene Alan Mitchell of Holland was killed in an accident, after a car struck him while he was riding his bike.

The accident occurred at 9:30 p.m. Monday on U.S. 31 at 16th Street in Holland. The roadway was closed to traffic shortly thereafter and remained closed for several hours.

The driver of the vehicle Pierre Lynn Hulsebus of Grandville was southbound on U.S. 31 and had the right of way, when Mitchell rode his bike across 31 in front of the car and the two collided, according to witnesses.

Indications are that traffic for US 31 had a green light and traffic was moving at highway speeds.
