WEST MICHIGAN — (FOX 17) — I can’t believe it’s almost May! Here is a look at some of the normals during the month, as well as some of the records that exist.

TEMPERATURE:

  • Normal highs start at 65º on the 1st and rise to 74º by the end of the month.  The record high for May is 98º , set on the 30th in 1895.
  • Normal lows rise from 43º to 53º. The record low for the month is 21º, set on the 1st in 1903.

PRECIPITATION: There is normally 3.98″ of precipitation in May. The wettest May was in 2001, when Grand Rapids received 10.01″, and the driest one was in 1936, when just 0.72″ fell.

SNOWFALL:  On average, there is just a trace of snow in May, though many times there isn’t even that. The snowiest May on record was in 1923, when 5.5″ fell.

LENGTH OF DAYLIGHT: 

  • On the 1st, the sunrise is at 6:36am, and the sunset is at 8:44pm. This gives a length of daylight of 14 hours and 8 minutes.
  • On the 31st, the sunrise is at 6:07, and the sunset is at 9:14. This gives a length of daylight of 15 hours and 7 minutes.
  • This means there is a gain of 59 minutes of daylight in May.
