zapata_20110419155538_320_240LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder Tuesday signed legislation that designates the portion of Interstate 94 that runs through Kalamazoo County as the Officer Eric Zapata Memorial Highway.

“Officer Eric Zapata dedicated his life to serving and protecting his fellow citizens,” Snyder said. “Designating the Officer Eric Zapata Memorial Highway in his honor is a gesture of gratitude that will remind future generations of his sacrifice.”

Zapata, 35, was killed in the line of duty on April 18, 2011, while coming to the aid of a fellow officer. He was the first officer in the department’s history to be killed in the line of duty.

Senate Bill 108, sponsored by state Sen. Tonya Schuitmaker, is now Public Act 20 of 2013.
