Purse-Snatching Suspect Arrested

KALAMAZOO, Mich — A 40-year-old man accused of stealing a woman’s purse and running away has been arrested.

It all started a little before 1 a.m. Tuesday at Gatis’ Up and Under, in the 700 block of West Michigan.

The person who called 911 said the suspect had run east down Academy Street. When officers got there, they learned that the victim and suspect had been talking in the parking lot when the suspect suddenly pushed the victim to the ground, grabbed her purse, and then fled on foot.  Upon hearing news of the robbery, an employee and another patron began chasing after the suspect.

Officers found him in a parking lot in the 400 block of West Lovell, held down by the two people who had gone after him.

The suspect now faces unarmed robbery charges, as well as assault and battery for punching one of those two men who had chased him.
