GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — Grand Rapids Police are investigating a Wednesday morning assault on the city’s southwest side. A suspect is believed to have been taken into custody at this time.

The GRPD confirms that a person has non-life threatening injuries, and that a shot was fired during the incident. It happened in the 1000 block of Ionia SW, during the time many children are leaving for school. The Grand Rapids Public Schools spokesperson tells FOX 17 that they have re-routed some buses that go near the area.

A GRPD captain tells FOX 17 they had a call come in around 7:09, and there were conflicting reports about whether the suspect was in the apartment or at a second location. At the first location, officers talked everyone out of the apartment that they knew was inside.

He says that officers went to that second location, on Dickinson, after reports that a person was walking around with a handgun. They were able to arrest the suspect and believe it is the same person they had been looking for on Ionia.

FOX 17’s Tim Swore is on the scene gathering the latest information for us.
