GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — Grand Rapids Police are investigating a Wednesday morning assault on the city’s southwest side, and a suspect has been taken into custody.

“There was an assault victim, however a shot had been fired during the course of the assault,” GRPD captain Eric Payne told FOX 17. “The injuries that were received were non life-threatening.”

It happened in the 1000 block of Ionia SW, during the time many children are leaving for school. The Grand Rapids Public Schools spokesperson tells FOX 17 that they re-routed some buses that go near the area.

Payne tells FOX 17 they had a call come in around 7:09, and there were conflicting reports about whether the suspect was in the apartment or at a second location. At the first location, officers talked everyone out of the apartment that they knew was inside.

He says that officers went to that second location, near Dickinson and Division, after reports that a person was walking around with a handgun. They were able to arrest the suspect and believe it is the same person they had been looking for on Ionia.
