KENTWOOD, Mich — Leaders will break ground Wednesday on the new St. Mary Magdalen Church, after it was destroyed by a fire.

It happens at 10 a.m., at 1213 52nd Street SE in Kentwood. Bishop Walter A. Hurley of the Diocese of Grand Rapids will be there, along with the church’s pastor, Father Godfrey Onyekwere. Representatives of Progressive AE and Erhardt Construction will also be in attendance, as well as members of the parish finance council, pastoral council and staff.

The fire happened back on July 1, 2012. A cross was saved, but not much else.

The church continues to raise money for the rebuilding efforts. Back in March, Father Godfrey Onyekwere announced that they had already raised more than $1.3 million.
