MILKY WAY — (FOX 17) — Each month, I discuss what you can see in the sky at night. This information is provided by Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.
PLANETS: Early in the month around 9:45pm, the planets Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter will form a straight line fairly low in the western sky. Mercury is at the top, Jupiter is at the bottom, and bright Venus is in the middle. As the days progress, this line of planets will get longer, as Mercury trends higher and Jupiter gets lower. Sky & Telescope magazine has an animation of these planets dancing with each other if you click HERE. Meanwhile, Saturn will be high in the south at dusk during June. You can view it and its largest moon, Titan, until around Midnight. Finally, Mars is visible low just before sunrise toward the end of the month.
SUMMER SOLSTICE: The summer solstice (“first day of summer”) is on June 21 at 1:04am EDT. From this point until the winter solstice in December, the length of daylight will decrease, though very slowly at first.
