GRPS Approves Modified Transformation PlanGRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — West Michigan’s largest school district is expecting to lay off dozens of employees, as well as lose hundreds of students, as they look ahead to balancing next year’s budget.

According to Michigan Radio, Grand Rapids Public Schools will have to reach into its savings to cover a projected deficit of $7.9 million in the fall.  That’s despite the major restructuring plan that saw the district undergo major transformations.

The district is expecting to lay off about 70 employees, 14 of whom will be teachers.  They are also preparing to lose some 700 students, mainly due to competition from new charter schools in the fall.
