6.6 hearing-web-gfxKALAMAZOO, Mich — Mayor Bobby J. Hopewell will take a hearing test Thursday to help raise awareness about hearing loss.

He’ll have a physical examination of both ears, a pure-tone test in a hearing booth, an audiogram review and a consultation with a hearing expert.

Hopewell is doing all of this because one in five Americans have hearing loss in at least one ear, however, only 13 percent of doctors screen for it routinely. As with many ailments, early detection is key.

“Millions suffer from hearing loss but since it happens gradually, most people don’t recognize the signs and eventually have it pointed out to them by a friend or family member,” said Dr. Thomas J. Tedeschi, Au.D., the vice president of Sonus Business Development.

The event happens at 12:30 at the Sonus Hearing Care Center. That’s located at 1803 Whites Road, Suite 1-B, in Kalamazoo. Sonus offers complimentary hearing screenings in an effort to increase the quality of life for those have hearing loss, and reduce the stigma associated with it.
