MONTCALM CO, Mich — A sheriff’s deputy relied on his nose Monday when he stumbled upon a marijuana grow operation in Montcalm County’s Winfield Township.

The officer was investigating an assault complaint around 7 p.m., trying to find a witness, when he smelled an overwhelming odor of pot coming from a neighbor’s residence on Huron Drive.

The 42-year-old man there said he was a medical marijuana cardholder, but admitted to having “a little over” his allowed 12 plants, according to a release. The deputy contacted the Central Michigan Enforcement Team, and the CMET found that the man actually had nearly 140 plants. That’s more than 10 times what he was allowed to have.

The suspect also had more than 2.5 ounces of loose pot, and a large amount of marijuana grow equipment.

The investigation continues, and an arrest has not been made as of Wednesday morning.
