CASCADE, Mich. — Drivers have put up with backups in the construction 28th Street between Patterson Avenue and Kraft Avenue for several months. The project has entered a new phase that will change little on 28th Street but change ramp access at I-96.

Reconstruction of the south side of 28th Street, the eastbound lanes, is complete, and all traffic, both eastbound and westbound, has been moved to the new pavement. That still means only one lane is open in each direction, and backups can be expected at Patterson Avenue, the traffic signals at Waterchase Plaza (Costco, Target, Staples, Dick’s Sporting Goods), and at I-96. But you will have new pavement to drive on, which means a smoother ride.

All ramps at I-96 are now open. Previously, the ramp from eastbound I-96 to eastbound 28th Street was closed, requiring you to take the 43A exit ramp and try to turn left to go eastbound under I-96. That caused backups on the exit ramp. There should be fewer or shorter delays getting off the expressway now.
