KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. – Shots were fired at a Kalamazoo County home on Monday night. Inside, police found the body of a wife and mother. On Tuesday, the woman’s husband was arraigned in a Kalamazoo County Courtroom.

John Kovach sat quietly as the judge charged him with his wife’s murder.

“I have nothing to say, your honor,” Kovach told the judge.

Police were called to the 6900 hundred block of E. Main Street in Comstock township at about 9 p.m on Monday after a 911 call came in reporting that gunshots were fired. The shots came from the home where Kovach lived with his wife, Nancy.

Lisa Hamilton, a neighbor, said she didn’t hear the gunshots, but heard arguing between the couple at about 8:30 p.m that night.

She wasn’t sure what the dispute was about, but police told FOX 17 it appears the couple was arguing over who was going to cook dinner. They also said some other problems between the husband and wife could have led up to the shooting.

“I’m really sad,” Hamilton said. “I haven’t slept well. It’s just something that shouldn’t have happened.”

Hamilton told FOX 17 that the Kovachs were a nice couple and that they had two young boys together. She said Nancy was “bubbly” and always smiling. Meanwhile, she said John was someone people could always count on.

“He was the type of neighbor who always helped out other neighbors,” Hamilton said.

On occasion, Hamilton said she would hear the couple arguing, but that it was never alarming. She said she can’t understand what would’ve made Kovach so angry. She continued to say, “I kind of feel like he should’ve  just walked away. Got in his car. Took a drive.”

The judge denied bond to Kovach during his arraignment. He is scheduled to be back in court on July 2.
