WEST MICHIGAN – The attached snapshot shows current temperatures across the lower 48 states. Notice the heat that has built in across most of the Midwest and South. Warm, humid, summer-like weather is expected over the next several days here in West Michigan.

While it’s not really unusual (since Saturday is the first full day of summer), a south to southwest flow will continue to pump in reinforcing heat and humidity through at least Thursday. After that, a cold front swinging through the Great Lakes will cool our temps down and eventually usher in a drier air mass. In fact, a trough in the upper levels of the atmosphere appears that it will set up shop over the Great Lakes just in time for next weekend. That should result in much cooler temps and perhaps even a few instability showers and thunderstorms.

Make sure to enjoy these days of June. These are some of the longest days we see all year! Sunrise occurs around 6:00 AM and doesn’t set until around 9:20 PM or so. That’s more than 15 hours of daylight! Compare that with the middle of winter when we typically see a sunrise around 8:00 AM and sunset around 5:00 PM.

The unfortunate part of the forecast is the threat for a thunderstorm or two over the next several days. It appears most of the time will be dry, but with a frontal system hanging around the Great Lakes and Upper Midwest, as well as the warmer, more humid weather, there’s always the chance for a shower/t’storm to “crop up.”
